Square One

Square One was founded in 2019.. 

In a region rich with strength and tradition — but often overlooked when it comes to behavioral health resources — too many individuals face trauma, victimization, homelessness, and severe mental illness without access to comprehensive, high-quality care. Services commonly available in urban areas are often out of reach here.

We saw that gap. And we decided to close it.

Square One exists to ensure that people in Appalachia do not have to leave their communities to receive excellent, trauma-informed behavioral health services. We believe healing should happen close to home — surrounded by the culture, family systems, and support networks that shape who people are.

We meet individuals at their “square one” — the moment when everything feels like it has fallen apart — and walk alongside them as they rebuild. Our work is rooted in dignity, accountability, and deep respect for the resilience that defines this region.

Appalachia is not broken. It is underserved.

And we are here to serve.

Ashley Durst and Sonya Hatem lead Square One with a shared commitment to serving Appalachia with integrity, clinical excellence, and heart.

Together, they bring years of experience in behavioral health, trauma-informed care, and community-based services. Their work has centered on individuals impacted by victimization, homelessness, severe mental illness, and systemic barriers to care.

Ashley and Sonya believe that rural communities deserve access to the same quality services found in urban areas — without sacrificing cultural identity or community connection. Their leadership is rooted in accountability, resilience, and a deep respect for the strength of the Appalachian region.

Square One is more than a program. It is a mission-driven response to the gaps they have witnessed firsthand — and a commitment to walking alongside individuals at their most vulnerable starting points.

Square One works in close collaboration with trusted community partners to ensure individuals who are marginalized, underserved, and in need of healing receive comprehensive, coordinated care.

Partners such as ODVN, OEASV, Integrated Services, the ADMHS Boards of Gallia, Jackson, and Meigs Counties, Health Recovery Services, and OHMAS strengthen our ability to respond to trauma, promote recovery, and support long-term stability across the Appalachian region.

Together, we are committed to breaking down barriers to care and walking alongside individuals on their path toward healing.

 Square One is committed to lighting a path to survivorship for individuals marginalized into victimization. We create positive change for those who feel alone, unsupported, and unheard by increasing awareness of the many forms of victimization affecting our communities. Through compassionate behavioral health services, advocacy, and crisis intervention, we meet clients where they are and guide them toward safety, stability, and self-defined success.
